Desktop Computers And Advancing Technology

By Matthew Kerridge

A desktop computer is also known as a PC or personal computer. This type of computer is deigned for use in a single location such as a home or office, as opposed to a laptop or notebook computer which is designed for travel. The first computers were gigantic and took up entire rooms, so with the invention of the first desktop computers, these were considered small in size even though they outsize modern computers considerably.

Desktops come in a big variety of sizes and styles. The tower design changes from company to company now and they can either be slim in size, regular. They can also lay flat or stand vertical on end. Some computers have the entire system tucked in behind the monitor, built in.

Which takes us to the difference in monitors on the desktop computer. Early monitors were big, bulky and very heavy. Monitors being made now are flat screen and very light. They are also getting less expensive as technology gets better. There are even touch screen models available for many PC's.

Some companies make an all-in-one design of desktops. These are great space savers. Now you don't have the heavy and bulky tower to take up room on your desk. Everything is built into the flat screen monitor. All the functioning parts like the mother board are built in and hidden. This is a very good option for people with limited space.

Unlike laptops, the PC has an external mouse as well as external keyboard. This makes for a variety of choices when it comes to choosing accessories. Also speakers are external so they can also be bought separately. This means you can choose top of the line accessories.

PC's are typically better choices than laptops because they tend to function better. They can handle graphics and video games better and usually have more memory and RAM which is why people choose them when looking for a gaming computer or graphics editing. Laptops can also break more often because they are transportable.

As time passes and technology gets better, the PC is becoming a better choice because you can upgrade your computer, many times on your own. Memory and RAM can be installed by just about anyone at any level. There are wireless network cards that can be installed, most with just a few screws. If you are try to do this with your laptop, you could have some problems because the components are so small and delicate. It can not only be frustrating, but you can actually damage your laptop. Choosing a PC over a laptop is a much better choice. - 30432
